‘Drummer Boy’ Brings Red Carpet Spectacle to Nashville as for KING + COUNTRY Celebrates Ambitious New Musical

From Revolutionary War drummers on the red carpet to a last-minute venue change, Angel Studios pulled off a spectacular Nashville premiere for a film that might be for KING + COUNTRY’s most ambitious creative achievement yet.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from watching for KING + COUNTRY over the years, it’s that the Smallbone family rarely does anything halfway. However, with DRUMMER BOY, arriving in theaters November 6 through Angel Studios, they’ve taken that ambition to an entirely new level.

Part historical drama, part sweeping musical spectacle, and entirely a love letter to the music and creative vision of for KING + COUNTRY, DRUMMER BOY is the kind of film that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.

Imagine the theatrical grandeur of The Greatest Showman transported to the American Revolutionary War, complete with elaborate choreography, massive battle sequences, extraordinary costumes, and the soaring music that bridges classical and modern that has become synonymous with Joel and Luke Smallbone.

The result is an incredibly impressive feat of filmmaking, and perhaps the clearest example yet of just how far the brothers’ creative vision can reach. The origins of DRUMMER BOY stretch back more than a decade, to a 2012 Christmas tour rehearsal at The Factory in Franklin, Tennessee.

At the time, for KING + COUNTRY needed a Christmas song. Their solution was a dramatic reimagining of “Little Drummer Boy,” complete with the explosive percussion and cinematic arrangements that would eventually make the song a signature part of their live performances.

14 years later, that idea has become a full-scale Hollywood production. And this time, it truly took the whole family.

Joel David Smallbone stars as Jeremiah Clem and co-directs the film alongside his brother Ben Smallbone. Luke Smallbone serves as a producer, while the music of for KING + COUNTRY provides the film’s sonic foundation.

“This is a film created by brothers, about brothers, and we’re humbled beyond words to bring it to life,” Joel and Ben shared.

The story follows Jeremiah Clem (Joel Smallbone), who joins the British forces, and his younger brother Benjamin (Lucas Leach), who takes up a drum and marches alongside the Patriots. Their conflict unfolds alongside the journey of Emmaline (India Brown), an enslaved woman fighting for a freedom neither army is prepared to guarantee.

At its heart, DRUMMER BOY is a story of family, faith, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the search for freedom. The ambition of the film is matched by a clear commitment to excellence, from the visual storytelling to the music itself. Of course, a movie this theatrical deserved an equally theatrical premiere.

On Wednesday, November 4, Angel Studios brought the cast, filmmakers, and fans together in Nashville for a massive red carpet celebration. But the evening nearly faced a major complication before it even began. The premiere had originally been scheduled for the historic Grand Ole Opry House. A water main break forced an unexpected, last-minute venue change, leaving organizers scrambling to relocate one of the city’s biggest film events. Fortunately, Nashville had a pretty spectacular backup plan.

Angel moved the celebration to Belmont University’s magnificent Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, arguably one of the most beautiful venues in Music City. And somehow, the change of scenery felt perfectly suited to the film. Outside the Fisher Center, Revolutionary War-era drummers dressed in full military costume greeted arriving guests, transforming the entrance into a living extension of the movie’s world. The result was a celebration worthy of the movie itself.

CCM Magazine’s Amanda and Logan Sekulow were on hand to capture the excitement, speaking with the people responsible for bringing DRUMMER BOY to life.
